BREAKING NEWS: COWBOYS' T.O. 'TUG OF WAR' By The Fish PDF Print E-mail
by Mike Fisher    Fri, Mar 10, 2006, 07:05 PM

At Valley Ranch, "T.O.W'' stands for "Terrell Owens Wanted.''

And it also stands for "Tug Of War'' -- with Jerry Jones and Bill Parcells white-knuckle-gripping opposite sides of the rope.

A source with intimate knowledge of the Cowboys' front-office innerworkings tells DallasBlog.com that the team's opinions on Troublesome Terrell have been drawn in the sand: Owner Jones is interested in exploring the possibility of acquiring the potentially cancerous All-Pro receiver, while coach Parcells opposes the idea and favors allowing Keyshawn Johnson to remain the team's go-to wideout.

"T.O. is interested and Jerry is interested,'' our source said. "Parcells is not interested.''

In no way are we forecasting a front-office blow-up; this isn't Jimmy/Jerry, or even Jessica Simpson/Nick Lachey. It is commonplace within the Cowboys braintrust to argue through ideas, as it is with every team and indeed with every company. What it is, instead, is a demonstration of how each of the Cowboys' bosses thinks of such moves in general.

A couple of years ago, Parcells and Jones debated about some move or another, and the coach went Old West on the owner, using a "pioneer-era'' analogy: "I believe we should 'hold the fort,'' the coach told Jones, going on to explain that in the Old West, pioneers under attack never left their fort to return East for more supplies. Instead, they stayed put and hung on to the good things they had.

"Hold the fort.''

Jones, of course, has another Old West philosophy: "Wild-cattin'.'' It's how he made his big money as a young man: Wild-cattin' for oil, taking a risk and drilling a hole and if it came up dry, just go take another risk and drill another hole.

"Wild-cattin'.''

So when it comes to T.O.W., will Dallas "Hold the Fort'' or will it go "Wild-Cattin'?''

From what we can gather (while working with the staff at http://cowboys.scout.com/ (TheRanchReport.com), the Chiefs appear to be very much in the Owens Sweepstakes; we hear buzz that they've already talked trade with the Eagles. In Denver, owner Pat Bowlen is downplaying the Broncos' much-ballyhooed interest, saying, "It's taken on a life of it's own, so to speak. I think there is a hell of a lot more credibility given to that than there should be.''

And in Dallas?

We've got lots of ears to the ground. We know from Jones' history that in many cases, he like to strike early on major FA's, thus preventing letting other teams set the market price for his targets. We hear that Dallas might be more willing (and able) to put together a multi-year contract offer for Owens than KC might be willing to do. We wonder if it might only take a second-day draft pick to acquire Owens. And we keep in mind that the Eagles might want to avoid allowing Owens to land with another NFC East rival.

Meanwhile, Parcells likely believes he's already put the possibility under his microscope. From "leaking'' info about Owens to his media friends months ago (as reported first here) to recently meeting with Owens' agent Drew Rosenhaus, the coach can confidently tell his owner the due diligence has been completed.

What is the next step?

One Cowboys boss needs to out-tug the other Cowboys boss.

Bud Must Go PDF Print E-mail
by Norm Hitzges    Fri, Mar 10, 2006, 03:28 PM

Barry Bonds cheated. There is no question about it. The story has come out and the book will soon be released. Two reporters from the San Francisco Chronicle have spent years researching

Everybody is talking about what Bud Selig should do…My question is why hasn't he already done something.

People are now clamoring for the commissioner to do something about the situation. And I completely agree with this. But my question is why in the hell didn’t Selig do something earlier? He will act now, but he should have acted years ago. This is crazy. What the hell does he do for a living?

If two reporters can get this information, shouldn't Bud Selig be able to get it. I think Bud was just hoping that this entire situation would just go away. Did he really think that Barry Bonds would break the record, retire and then everyone would forget about this?

What a joke! Whenever I start to think that Bud Selig is showing signs of life, he does something (or in most cases does nothing) to prove me wrong.

Selig's non-action has allowed this situation to slowly turn into a huge controversy and it is not going to get any better. IF there is definitive proof that Barry Bonds used steroids after they were banned by Major League Baseball, Selig should have known about it. He should have acted immediately. Instead, he allowed a couple of reporters to unearth the information.

Why didn't Major League Baseball get this information? Because Selig didn't want it. I think he knew but he didn't want to “know”.

This has become such a huge farce. Barry Bonds is a walking steroid. That is bad. But the fact that Major League Baseball had access to information that would prove it had a problem and then refused to pay any attention to it is detestable. BUD SELIG SHOULD BE FIRED.

SOC vs. Dunbar for 4A title Saturday PDF Print E-mail
by Dave McNabb    Fri, Mar 10, 2006, 03:32 AM

Traditional D-FW powers South Oak Cliff and FW Dunbar meet for the 4A state basketball championship at 4 p.m. Saturday. They both defeated overmatched opponents in cruising to semifinal wins Thursday night.

Trying for back-to-back state titles, SOC has plenty of talent with 6-9 Darrell Arthur and 6-7 Ronnie Morgan but the Golden Bears' guards will have to survive the pressure of Dunbar, coached by Robert Hughes Jr., legendary dad's son. Dunbar has a lot of good players and no big body to match up with Arthur, a big problem. But Dunbar has a college-player mentality. They've been in lots of big games. Flying Wildcats won't get rattled when Arthur slams an alley-oop or blocks a shot. They'll drive the basket to try and get Arthur in foul trouble. Dunbar and SOC avoid playing each other outside of state tourney. Dunbar has won the last two meetings _ a non-district December game before SOC won last year's state title. Dunbar also beat SOC in the '03 state semfinals.

Family ties: Dunbar's tradition actually led to SOC. Dunbar's Robert Hughes coached former SOC coach Jimmy Gales at FW I.M. Terrell, a PVIL state championship program.  As a coach, Gales fueled SOC's program in the '80s with the same kind of energy and intensity taught at Terrell and Dunbar. One of Gales' SOC players, Ronnie Morgan, went on to be a star player for Gales at North Texas. In the 4A final tonight: two of Morgan's sons _ 6-7 senior Ronnie and 6-10 sophomore J'Mison.

What Will the Cowboys Do With All That Cap Room? PDF Print E-mail
by Norm Hitzges    Thu, Mar 9, 2006, 09:17 PM

Well the negotiations are over and the CBA is finally done. And, when all is said and done the Cowboys may have as much as $30 - $35 million in cap room.

The Cowboys already had about $4 million under the cap then the cut LaRoi Glover. Then Dat Nguyen retired. They can restructure Jason Ferguson. They can restructure Rivera.

I don’t know if they would cut Larry Allen. But, Allen is getting paid as a top level tackle and he’s playing mid-level guard. He’s making too much for what he is doing.

What will the Cowboys do with all of this cap room?

First of all, realize that all of these delays in the start of free have allowed GMs and players to talk. General Managers were not messing with these negotiations. GMs that knew that they were going to have room under the cap were out talking to players. Once free agency starts this weekend we could see a lot of players sign contracts very quickly.

The Cowboys are looking for a safety. They want to move Keith Davis back to his role as backup safety behind Roy Williams. Davis is a monster on special teams. If the Cowboys can reduce his role at safety they can really take advantage of his skills on special teams.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cowboys went after 2 veteran free agent at safety. I’ve already told you about Corey Chaveous but remember the name Marco Coleman who played in the Jets secondary with Aaron Glenn years ago. I could see him show up in Dallas.

The Cowboys will also obviously be in the market for offensive linemen. Look for them to sign 2 or even 3 on the offensive line.

They will also look to sign at least 1 linebacker. I think that they will retain the services of Scott Fujita and add at least one more.

The Cowboys shopping list for me is:

Kicker

Linebacker

Defensive Lineman

2 Safeties

Wide Receiver

Tight End (possibly)

It would not surprise me if the Cowboys signed as many as 7 free agents. Given the haul of free agents last year and what looks like a good draft coupled with another productive off season this year, the Cowboys will have overcome years of bad drafts.
