Exclusive: The Inside Story Of The Mavs' 3-Platform Sales Pitch For Summer Shopping

From LeBron And Wade And Beyond: Unselfishness, Business And 'Uncle Sams'

By Mike Fisher -- DB.com

The Dallas Mavericks have formulated The Sales Pitch.

It does not feature a set-in-stone itinerary. It does not feature show-biz flash. It does not feature a singular target.

But at 12:02 a.m Eastern time on July 1, the Mavs will put into action their Summer of 2010 sales pitch for available NBA stars – LeBron James and Dwyane Wade and all the rest, the marketing wave set to occur only after Dallas has, hopefully, secured the services of Dirk Nowitzki.

“We definitely have a plan,’’ Mavs GM Donnie Nelson tells me. “There are details to it. … but there also needs to be flexibility in it.’’

The Sales Pitch is a living, breathing, flexible thing … and DallasBasketball.com, after a dozen conversations with the principals (some for attribution, some from unnamed sources, some as general background) has learned that The Sales Pitch is founded upon three fundamental platforms.

Read on for the details. …

Caron: 'I Wanna Win A (Ring) In Dallas!' Welcome To Mavs Twitterverse Print E-mail
by Mike Fisher    Sun, Jun 20, 2010, 09:18 AM
Twitter can give us an unfiltered look into the thoughts of a player. This is no longer a new phenomenon, but it can remain an interesting one. And today, it’s an interesting one regarding the Mavs’ Caron Butler, who in a series of tweets is discussing his fitness, his willingness to play anywhere but most of all, his desire to “win a chip in Dallas.’’

Athletes are not new to the world of Twitter. We’ve seen their tweets quoted on sports shows. We’ve read about them in articles. And, we’ve heard them on the radio. In his show that aired before each game of the Finals, Jimmy Kimmel had a bit where they read entertaining tweets by Ron Artest.

This might be a good time for the “soft roll-out’’ of DallasBasketball.com’s Mavs Twitterverse, a collection of media members, athletes and whomever who we think contribute greatly to the flow of Mavericks information. Make it a favorite … and in an act of one-stop-shopping you can keep up with Fish, Followill, David Lord, Mark Cuban and more … (Check it out and tell us what you think!)

Which Friend-Of-DB.com/Mavs Fan Is Dating Kim Kardashian? Print E-mail
by Mike Fisher    Wed, Jun 16, 2010, 11:21 AM
DallasBasketball.com and DallasBlog readers are, by and large, snazzy types. They wear fine clothing from Lombardo Custom Apparel, they drive fine motorcars from Freeman Toyota, they dine at classy joints like Esparza's in Grapevine and they date dazzling women like Kim Kardashian.

That’s correct, gentlemen. Quite possibly reading this item right now, just as you are, is a fellow Mavs fan who is about to become National Enquirer fodder due to his supposed relationship with Ms. Kardashian, world-renowned due to her … (read on)

Does Mavs Coach Carlisle Fit LeBron's Profile? James Wants Coach Who Played In NBA Print E-mail
by Mike Fisher    Fri, Jun 11, 2010, 06:57 AM

A Mavs-related LeBron note of interest, as maybe Rick Carlisle is on a short list of sorts:

It is difficult to know whether this is a LeBron James “requirement’’ or if it’s a whimsical desire. Or is it a foundation of James’ future? Is this like Britney Spears demanding her dressing room be fully stocked with “Pop Tarts, Fruit Loops and Cap’n Crunch’’ … you know, just so she can prove she can get whatever ridiculous thing she asks for?

So here’s the story: Buried at the bottom of the Cleveland paper’s coverage of Tom Izzo’s visit with the Cavs is the following note:

James has let the organization know is that he's interested in a coach that has played in the NBA …

And you know where I’m going next, right? Which teams have coaches who played in the NBA?

Here’s the complete list (I believe) along with a quickie comment:
