Class 3A Prosper has landed one of the state's top baseball coaches in former 3-time Class 5A state champion coach Rick Carpenter of Fort Bend Elkins _ all because of a Fort Bend flap about a fourth-grade teacher who appeared on the 'Bachelor" and Carpenter's wife taking the disciplinary fall for the school district's decision not to tell parents why she was missing.
It's quite the soap opera with lots of perspectives. The result is a great one for Prosper athletes. Carpenter had an overall varsity record of 366-110-4, according to ElkinsBaseball.com. He coached Elkins teams to nine district championships, six regional championships, three state championships and, in 2002, a national championship
SMU is planning an alumini event in August in memory of men's soccer player Jordan Mann, who died unexpectedly in his sleep May 26. SMU's coaching staff and team members attended Mann's funeral in Prairie Village, Kan. last week.
Mann was the third SMU student to die in May and the fourth in the last year.
Mann graduated in May with a degree in finance and returned to his parents' home where he died in his sleep. An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death. Medical examiners believe Mann might have had a heart defect.
Mann played on the Mustangs' 2005 Final Four qualifier and was named to the Conference USA all-academic team.
Mesquite Poteet defeated its longtime nemesis Highland Park, 4-3, in an extra-inning, single-game playoff at Colleyville Heritage on Friday night. Poteet sophomore shortstop Brett Doe singled in a run off HP starter Evan Blakeley, who sparked Highland Park's playoff run after becoming eligible midway through the season.
Doe, the son of second-year Poteet coach Bobby Doe, got Poteet its first state tournament berth after numerous playoff runs the past 15 years have ended in disappointment.
Poteet junior pitcher Teddy Nowell (16-0), the son of former Poteet coach Ted Nowell, picked up the win for Poteet. The only runs Nowell allowed were on RBIs by Highland Park center fielder Dutch Crews, who was a teammate of Nowell and Poteet catcher J.T. Files when they won the 16-under Mickey Mantle World Series last year for Dallas' DBAT team.
