Coppell is set to name Bob Shipley of Burnet as its new football coach. The announcement could come as early as Tuesday.
Shipley replaces former Coppell coach Mike Fuller, who left May 18 to become coach at nearby Colleyville Heritage.
Shipley was an assistant coach at Abilene Christian when Fuller, 37, was an ACU quarterback in the early 1990s.
Shipley told Coppell administrators he'll keep the same pass-oriented offense Fuller installed and is popular in the community.
Coppell defensive coordinator Carl Stralow is expected to run Coppell's football camp for incoming ninth through 12th graders beginning June 4 but it's undetermined whether Stralow will remain on Coppell's staff or move to Colleyville with Fuller. Stralow was a finalist for the position.
Former Coppell coach Johnny Ringo of Plano East withdrew his name from consideration and Gilmer coach Jeff Traylor declined an interview with Coppell Superintendent Dr. Jeff Turner, whom Traylor had worked with in Jacksonville.
Shipley is well-known and well-respected for his coaching at Class A Rotan near Abilene and 4A Burnet in Central Texas.
Shipley's family ties in state football run deep.
Shipley played at Abilene Christian and his brother Steven is the second-leading receiver in TCU history.
Shipley's son, Jordan, is a junior receiver for Texas. Bob Shipley was an ACU roommate of Brad McCoy, the father of Longhorns quarterback Colt McCoy.
Shipley brings to Coppell another son entering high school that is expected to be a top receiver as well.
