BEIJING: Over 40,000 globe-trotting Chinese tourists flock to the frozen confines of Antarctica each year. Consequently, Chinese officials plan to construct an aiport on the continent.

According to Press TV, "The Chinese government plans to build the airfield near its Antarctic Zhongshan Station on Larsemann Hills in Prydz Bay in East Antarctica, the Beijing Evening News reported on Monday."

A Chinese newspaper is quoted as saying that, “[Researchers] must rely on maritime transport…[which is] seriously affecting the ability of scientific exploration.”

As reported by Press TV, "Antarctica is politically neutral and has no government, although various countries claim sovereignty in certain areas. A few of these countries have mutually recognized each other’s claims, though the validity of these claims is not recognized universally."

Does Antarctica have any minerals, natural gas or oil natural resources?
