Pickpocket fiends from all over the world are settling in the United Kingdom to prepare for large-scale pickpocket schemes to fleece tourists who visit London for the Summer Olympics this year.

The Daily Mail of London reports that, “Britain is in the grip of a pickpocketing epidemic as Eastern European gangs descend on London ahead of the Olympic Games.”

More than 1,700 people fall victim daily, which accounts for a surge in street crimes. Crime has increased nearly a fifth in just two years, as disclosed by official crime statistics released yesterday.

According to the Mail, “at the same time, police warned that professional gangs from Romania, Lithuania and even South America who operate in capitals across Europe are heading to Britain, intent on cashing in on unwitting tourists at London 2012.”

A BBC investigative reporter exposed the tactics utilized by Romanian thieves, who had previously been operating in Barcelona, to dupe their victims.
