Since the beginning of this year, the death toll in a swine flu epidemic in India has risen to 21, health officials say.

According to the BBC News, “most of the deaths have been reported from the western state of Mahrashtana. Rajasthan, Andra Pradesh and Karnataka have also reported deaths.”

More than 300 others have been infected with the illness and most of them have been admitted to hospitals.

As reported by the BBC, “the cause of the sudden outbreak is not clear. The virus killed more than 450 Indians when it first emerged in 2009. Health officials say the rise in new cases could be a ‘short spurt.’”

Pune, a city in western India, has been the worst hit. Most deaths occurred since March.
