Sheila Jackson Lee Faces Censure for Cougar Cheerleading

U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (D.-Tx.) faces the wrath of the House Ethics Committee for showing an over-abundance of enthusiasm when she gave a speech on the House floor about her ardent support for the University of Houston Cougars’ football team.

The Houston Chronicle reports that, “the Democratic congresswoman from Houston got so enthusiastic in her effusive praise of the hometown University of Houston Cougars that she may have violated House rules.”

Apparently, Ms. Jackson Lee was ranting and raving over the unbeaten 12-0 Cougars as they get ready for the Conference USA title game against Southern Mississippi at Robertson Stadium on Saturday.

She told her colleagues on the House floor that, “we’re excited about cougars. We’re Cougar Red and we thank Coach Kevin Sumlin for not being interested in where he goes next year but focused on the kids and the championship. Coach Kevin, you are the best.”

According to the Houston Chronicle, “after congratulating the school’s students, leadership and academic excellence, Jackson Lee (figuratively) put on her cheerleader uniform to boost the 6th-ranked Houston team as it hopes to clinch a Bowl Championship Series bowl bid.”

Ms. Jackson Lee, aka camera hog, looked at C-span cameras to say, “to all of you, I want to say to you on the floor of the House: Go, Cougars!”

However, Emily Heil of the Washington Post noted that “such cheerleading is technically verboten.”

She was abruptly penalized by presiding officer, Tim Scott (R.-S.C.), who scornfully remarked, “please direct all remarks to the chair and not the viewing audience.”

She should have been cheering Texas Southern, and the Gorilla Section of the Houston Zoo to support her voting constituents and family members.

I thought "cougars" were older women who had affairs with much younger men.
