Jeb Bush Goes Jihad for Common Core in Dubai Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Sun, Nov 23, 2014, 10:25 PM

$ 1Acoredubai.jpgFormer Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, a Republican, has deployed his education expert cronies to teach Common Core in Dubai.

The Teach United Arab Emirates Website reports that, "On October 24th and 25th (2014)hundreds of education professionals and scholars from the Middle East, North Africa and America, will gather in Dubai for a symposium on implementing C Bennetommon Core State Standards (CCSS) in regional American curriculum schools. The goal of this annual conference is to help teachers raise their level of instruction by aligning their lessons to the CCSS in English Language Arts and Mathematics. The conference also seeks to empower teachers to increase the academic success of their students, showcase exceptional CCSS aligned classroom resources, and connect CCSS educators across the Middle East and North Africa. Last year’s conference, the first of its kind, attracted over 300 attendees from 7 countries and hosted 23 speakers. This year’s conference will exceed those numbers."

Dr. Cory Bennett, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education within the Department at Idaho State University and Director of the Idaho Regional Mathematics Center, is quoted as saying that, “The shift to the teaching and learning of math based around the Common Core State Standards means re-learning how to think and behave like a mathematician; re-learning what it means to understand and do math. Often this means learning how to present explorations in math in a way unlike anything previously experienced as students of mathematics. As such, attending the MENA Common Core Conference is critical for educators to further develop their ability to effectively create rich math learning environments.”

According to Teach United Arab Emirates, "Conference activities will include Interactive presentations, by expert educators from leading education organizations, on implementing the CCSS and breakout sessions to facilitate action planning for schools.  Barbara Golub, co-author of “Units of Study in Opinion, Informational, and Narrative Writing,” will deliver a keynote speech regarding the CCSS in international schools with large English language learner populations. Dr. Cory Bennett, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education within the Department at Idaho State University and Director of the Idaho Regional Mathematics Center, will present a keynote address on implementing CCSS in Math at American Curriculum schools in the region."

By implementing Common Core in Dubai, more teachers will be prepared to impose it in the USA.

To learn why Common Core is not good for our students or our country from a pedagogical view watch this one hour teacher created video.

This is probably the best and most thoroughly researched anti-Common Core presentation to date.

Tom,
We are the organizers of the MENA Common Core Conference. Our company, KDSL, is an international education consulting firm that engages in many different types of projects to enhance school improvement, teaching and learning in the MENA region. First, we would like you to know that we do not work for Jeb Bush. The MENA Common Core Conference was organized by KDSL to support teachers in the region, who teach at American curriculum schools, in implementing the CCSS. It is neither my decision, my company's decision, or any teacher's decision to have to follow the Common Core here in MENA. These decisions are made by local school owners, school management companies, school investors, and regulatory agencies and are regarding private schools. I can assure you that no public school in the Middle East is following the Common Core. Private American curriculum schools have chosen the Common Core the way the 48 States (now 43) states in America did. These private American Curriculum schools are accountable for sending expatriate students back to America on grade level and sending students to American Universities.

Please know that KDSL understands the controversy surrounding Common Core and the Americanization of education. This debate is slowly becoming more transparent in the region, the way it has in America. We endeavor, however, to provide teachers with support who are not familiar with Common Core and need a helping hand in understanding the standards and learning how to implement them. If teachers and schools are being required to use the CC, shouldn't they at least have some professional development in this implementation?
