BEIJING: Chinese officials touted the Three Gorges Dam as a so-called 'Green Energy' resource. Ironically, the hydroelectric power plant could shut down due to garbage clogging up the Yangtze River.
China Radio International reports that, "A total of 1,700 tons of floating garbage has been cleaned up from the Three Gorges Dam as of Wednesday. The garbage, swept down to the dam by the second wave of upper Yangtze flooding, has contaminated the water and poses serious threats to hydro-power installations on the dam."
The Yangtze River is so polluted that it is nearly as bad and dangerous as nuclear waste.
According to CRI, "Authorites say the Three Gorges Dam was hit by the biggest flooding tide of the season on Sunday, embracing some 55,000 cubic meters of water every second. The wave, which was caused by torrential rain in the upper Yangtze regions, brought along a massive floating island of disposed garbage, tree trunks, and other vegetation."
It could take years to clean up the garbage-filled Yangtze River.
