BEIJING: CCTV's business news anchor Rui Chenggang was recently arrested in China over an alleged bribery scheme. He captured glory as a reporter in China for interviewing global leaders and top business executives. He claimed that former President Bill Clinton was a good friend, while he sold and promoted his videos. He tapped into 'Clinton Cronyism' to become a rock star reporter, who won glowing praise from the Western media.
Nevertheless, hubris got the best of him and his pervasive greed led to his downfall. He even sold his videos to CCTV executives, who already owned the rights and produced the video clips on his behalf. Rui believed that his friendship with billionaire tycoon George Soros could protect him from harm.
Rui had joined a speaker's circuit called 'Sage World,' which promoted Leftist politicians, business people and journalists to rake in big bucks on the speaking circuit. They received mega bucks from multinational corporations to give speeches at corporate seminars.
Rui's friendship with Bill Clinton made him a rising star in the Chinese media, but also led to his demise, since former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has stumbled with her recent book tour, and many insiders believe that she might not succeed in her White House bid in 2016. Hence, Chinese officials no longer need to play nice with the Clintons.
Rui's demise could expose the rest of the Chinese media to a nationwide corruption crackdown. He may likely snitch on others to receive a reduced prison sentence.
