Japan Reclaims Takeshima Rights in Sea of Japan Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Wed, Jun 11, 2014, 09:10 PM

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe may soon enact legislation to declare formally that the Takeshima Islets in the Sea of Japan are property of Tokyo, not south Korea.

The Dong-A-Ilbo reports that, "More than 30 lawmakers and local governments claimed en masse that “Takeshima (Japanese name for Dokdo) belongs to Japanese territory” at a gathering in central Tokyo on Thursday. The Shinzo Abe administration, which has demanded a South Korea-Japan summit, also sent a vice-ministerial official to support the rally."

Japanese lawmakers are irate at South Koreans for claiming that Takeshima should be called Dokdo and considered property of Seoul.

According to the Dong-A-Ilbo, "In its spokesman’s statement on the move in Japan, the Korean Foreign Affairs Ministry strongly protested, saying, “Japan is constantly making false claims regarding Korea’s sovereign territory.” The ministry summoned Hisashi Michigami, deputy chief of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, and conveyed Seoul’s message to that effect."

Japanese lawmakers have declared their willingness to go to war over Takeshima in the Sea of Japan.
