Alleged Sunflower Activist Terrorizes Taipei Subway, 4 Dead Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Wed, May 21, 2014, 11:40 PM

The Dallas Blog has just received information from credible sources in Taipei, Taiwan that the university student, who went on a stabbing spree at the Taiwan MRT subway station yesterday and killed four people, was allegedly affiliated with the Sunflower student activist group, which is a Leftist Democracy movement.

According to ABS CBN News, "Four people were killed and 21 wounded in a stabbing attack Wednesday afternoon on a Taipei subway train, after which police arrested a male university student as a suspect, authorities said."

The Sunflower story has sparked much discussions in Taiwan. Here is a message that has been emailed to the Dallas Blog, which has already been forwarded hundreds of times:

 Dear Mr. McGregor,

Please immediately retract the false article on the tragic stabbing on the Taipei Metro on May 21. Your accusation that there might be any link whatsoever between the suspect and the 318 Sunflower Movement is both absolutely baseless and dangerous. In fact, the suspect's university office of secretariat clarified Cheng did not participate in the protest.
http://bit.ly/1tr9thy

As a Taiwan citizen, I have been closely following both the Sunflower Movement as well as the media coverage of the incident, I can assure you that there is no such link. Also, your comparison between the Sunflower Movement and the red guards is inappropriate.

Sincerely,

Dallas Blog article continues: A Taiwan source described Sunflower group as copying, "the little Red Guard from the Chinese Cultural Revolution for political gain."

As reported by ABS CBN News, "The suspect, reportedly a 21-year-old sophomore at Tunghai University in Taichung, began the stabbing spree at Longshan Temple Station, on the Taipei Metro's Banqiao Line that runs between Taipei and New Taipei, at the start of the evening rush hour."

Billionaire tycoon George Soros is considered a strong supporter of the Sunflower Group and allegedly a generous donor for them.

So many parts of this article are just wrong and total misinformation. Its disturbing that this article came up when I searched for news about the incident. The writer of this article has no concept of what the Sunflower Movement is and who the criminal is. You should rewrite this or take it down.

Your source is severely in error. The alleged attacker is a 21 year old who suffered from otaku syndrome and stayed home in his house. He was antisocial and had planned this for years. It is not related to the Sunflower movement.

The claim that the Sunflower movement copies the Red Guard is pure pro-government propaganda and should be summarily disregarded. It is utter nonsense. I have a large collection of Sunflower links here:

You'd do well to find yourself a less biased source than the one you are currently using.

Dear Editor,
This article has tried to mislead readers to link the tragedy happened in Taipei yesterday afternoon with Sunflower Student Activity took place weeks ago.

According to the local police, there is NO EVIDENCE showing the murderer ever took part in mentioned student activity. Everything is still under investigation, how come your "sensitive" reporters knew something we local people didn't know?!

I believe a news blog like Dallsblog.com could have spent more time on true story from more reliable sources rather than making up a fake one.

It would be highly appreciated if you can remove the picture from the blog, I don't think Apple Daily is happy with this picture showing here like this with an ambiguous article, I have sent this blog to them for further legal action to be taken.

This "news" is a terrible display of information manipulation for political gain. There is not even the slightest hint of evidence of the killer being linked to the Sunflower Movement, a democratic campaign which at least hundreds of thousands of peaceful Taiwanese (and non-Taiwanese) citizens supported. The only link the killer's rampage had to politics was that he quoted the Republic of China's "founding father" by saying he wanted to do "something great".
The connection you made between the Sunflower Movement and the Red Guard of the Chinese Cultural Revolution is absurd, as they had completely opposite political goals, and the methods they employed to further them were wholly different. The point of the Sunflower Movement was to distance Taiwan from Communist China, not become a part of it.
Your "reporting" of this matter is heavily skewed to appeal to freedom-hating right-wingers. You should be ashamed.

It's surreal to me how common Communist China publicly stated opinion and the opinions of the very right media in America match up these days.

Specifically to this article, it is wholly inaccurate. Even the most ardent anti-sunflower movement groups within Taiwan (and yes, I actually live here and have for 16 years) aren't attributing the attacker's actions to any political leanings.

In fact, the attacker himself has stated that his sole purpose in doing the horrible thing that he did was just to do "something big".

Contrary to what you said in your first sentence, ZERO credible sources whatsoever, whether in the Taiwanese public or government domain, or in the Taiwanese media domain, has ever identified any proof that there is any linkage between the Sunflower movement and the massive stabbing incident in Taipei's subway. When you say "credible" sources, you should at least provide a level of proof.

Once again, your mentioning of Soros' support is completely evidence-less.

In fact, these two headlines are viewed as completely separate issues. Any attempt to link these two have been viewed as being manipulative and foolish so far in Taiwan.

I am not sure why you would even make the above two claims without any evidence and for this reason, I feel very concerned about the overall integrity of your reporting.

As for the political gain, even if there were any, would not have been the main goal to begin with.
The Taiwanese government has long been corrupt and dysfunctional, and to write an article that seemingly condemns the people's right to supervise the government is very detrimental to that cause.

As has been noted, his school (located in central Taiwan, not in Taipei) has specifically stated that he was not involved in the student movement. I have to wonder exactly who these unnamed "credible sources" you refer to are. They don't sound in the least credible if they make such outlandish assertions. One particular loony politician (one who went on TV in China and tried to insist that a bunch of sunflowers seen on video in the occupied legislature were bananas provided by the opposition political party) did try to make a connection between the Sunflower Movement and the murders, but even he only claimed that the student movement had caused "chaos" and thus somehow caused the murders by disturbing societal order, which is an absurd enough thing to say. The claim (made by the same "credible" source, perhaps?) that the Sunflower Movement copied the Red Guards "for political gain" is likewise nonsensical. The Sunflower Movement was purely a grassroots protest against a trade agreement negotiated secretly with China by Taiwan's government that many people feel sold out Taiwan's interests and potentially could open the door to a Chinese takeover. So there was no resemblance to the Red Guard whatsoever and the only parties acting in the interest of "political gain" were the politicians and corporate interests pushing the trade agreement. Finally, I have heard nothing about George Soros offering any support to the Sunflower Movement after it arose (even verbal support, though it is conceivable that he, like many others, made a statement in favor of the movement), and the implication that he is a major backer of it is certainly false.

Guess that Dallas Blog’s reputation is going to be undermined by Mr McGregor who was simply taking in wrong information without carefully examining the ‘credible source’ and has no idea about the Sunflower movement in Taiwan at all.

I have no idea why he suddenly wants to talk about a tragic event far away in Taipei and tries to make up some comments without fully understanding about the background of MRT killer.

The article also shows his poor knowledge about the political history between China and Taiwan. The movement of Red Guards was conducted by the top leaders of Chinese Communist Party , nevertheless, the Sunflower movement was raised by different civil societies.

Please do more background research if you wants to discuss about such kind of events Mr McGregor.

Your sources have been proved wrong. This murder is unrelated to sunflower movement.
I am very surprised that a professional American media person use the wrong picture to misinform the community

There are people leaving message on here telling you what you had written is FALSE and please STOP mislead the public!!
Despite all these comment and all you're going to respond is you're just going to change the the headline to "Alleged Sunflower Activist Terrorizes Taipei Subway, 4 Dead" due to noted concern? and still HAVE NOT SPEND ANY TIME TO DO FURTHER INVESTIGATION WHAT SO EVER

I strongly suggest you to verify with your "Credible source" again. If you can't even do that, at least try to go watch some report on this incident with credible source like CNN.

This is not a responsible report and later it has been verified that the alleged killer is not linked to Sunflower Movement at all.

A reporter/blogger should be wise and cautious enough to verify so called " source" when it comes to stating news. A lot of time the "source" can be a one-side story as some people would like to tweak the truth just to stir up controversy and blame their political opponents for it when a tragedy like this happened in Taiwan.

You should apologize for your false accusation towards Sunflower Movement!!

I don't this this blogger is to blame. The problem is that the sources that are supposed to be credible are not, because the Taiwanese government is hiding the truth and trying whatever they can to blacken the name of the sunflower movement. Shame on the Taiwanese government.
