Labor Unions Prepare for Strikes in Ukraine Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Thu, Apr 24, 2014, 12:26 AM

Labor Unions plan to launch nationwide strikes in the Ukraine.

According to the Voice of Russia, "Striking miners in Krasnodon, a city in Ukraine’s eastern Lugansk region, have refused to pay 10% of their wages to restore Independence Square in Kiev that was devastated by protests in February this year. The miners have been blocking the administration of the rasnodonugol Company responsible for running the mines for the past two days because they did not receive part of their advance payment early this week."

Miner Stanislav Denisenko is quoted as saying that, "I do not understand what we have got to do with it. It was not we who took block stones to pieces and burnt houses in Kiev! I earn 3,000 hryvnias or about 9,000 roubles a month, and they take away part of my wages for God knows what!"

As reported by the Voice of Russia, "Local media also reports that protests also demand the reinstatement of a few dozen of their colleagues who they say have been fired from their jobs for taking part in pro-federalization rallies in the region. While the coal sector workers mainly remain apolitical, some still question the legitimacy of the Kiev government."

No word yet on whether labor unions based in the United States will endorse the Ukraine labor strikes.
