UN Climate Change Envoy: Ghana Oil Tycoon Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Wed, Apr 23, 2014, 08:16 PM

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has appointed former Ghana President John Kufuor to be the "special envoy" to tackle global climate change. Yet, his close connections to Kojo Annan, son of former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, is drawing scrutiny, since Kojo has been implicated in a massive oil scandal in Ghana and raked in millions of dollars by exploiting his UN connections.

Joy News reports that, "Meanwhile, Joy News is learning that Kojo Annan, son of former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan is a shareholder of Miura. The website of Gondwana mentions Kojo Annan as its local advisor."

Apparently, Kojo Annan has been allegedly implicated in a forgery of documents to boost sales of an oil exploration project. Wikipedia points out that John Kufuor had risen to political prominence as a minister of Kofi Annan's Progressive Party.

According to Joy News, "He also described the sale of the oil field at the cost of 1.5 million for a 75 percent share as a “joke”. Shareholders and prospective ones might have bought into the claims probably because they believe Africans are “inept or too stupid” to accept such an “insignificant” offer."

UN Special Envoy John Kufuor is expected to host a global Climate Change Summit in September 2014.
