BEIJING: President Barack Obama's Pivot on Asia may soon lead to a diplomatic crisis. Obama had just drawn a Red Line on the Senkaku Islands, which China claims is the Diayou Islands and their territory. Accordingly, if China does not cross the Red Line and seize the islands by force, Beijing could be perceived as weak.
According to Fox News, "President Barack Obama confirmed Wednesday that America's mutual security treaty with Japan applies to the islands at the center of a territorial dispute between China and Japan."
China is not looking to appear weak while other countries have crossed Obama's Red Lines without facing severe consequences.
As reported by Fox News, "His statement seems aimed at reassuring Japan that the U.S. would come to its defense if China were to seize the islands, known as the Diayou in China. Russia's annexation of Crimea has sparked concern about America's political will to protect Asian allies, notably in Japan and the Philippines."
This week could get very stormy and fast.
