BEIJING: The Chinese government intends to teach its citizens a harsh lesson about the punitive dangers of eating monkey meat. Those who eat primate flesh will get sent to re-education camps and learn how to stop conducting "bad social conduct."
China Radio International reports that, "A draft interpretation of China's Criminal Law, tabled for reading on Monday, aims to clear up ambiguities by clearly defining eating endangered wild animals, or buying them for this or other purposes, as illegal."
Lang Sheng, deputy head of the Legislative Affairs Commission of the National People's Congress, is quoted as saying that, "Eating rare wild animals is not only bad social conduct but also a main reason why illegal hunting has not been stopped despite repeated crackdowns.
According to China Radio International, "Currently, 420 species of wild animals are considered rare or endangered by the Chinese government. They include giant pandas, golden monkeys, Asian black bears and pangolins."
Monkey eat offenders could face five to ten years imprisonment in a re-education camp.
