South Korea's capital city, Seoul, is experiencing a rapid decline of its population on account of low birth rates and soaring property tax rates.
The Chosun Ilbo reports that, "The population of Seoul has dropped below 10 million for the first time in 25 years as the capital ages rapidly. Seoul's population had breached the 10-millionth mark in 1998 and once neared the 11-million mark."
South Korea also struggles with a severe energy crisis, since the government has imposed rigid regulations on power plants.
As reported by the Chosun Ilbo, "According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government on Monday, the total population of the capital stood at 10.14 million as of December of last year. But the number falls to 9.99 million excluding some 150,000 residents whose addresses in Seoul cannot be verified."
Although illegal, abortion is common in the country. Some say that an abortion is committed in one out of every three pregnancies here.
