South Africa Bets Big on Coal Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Sun, Jan 12, 2014, 08:07 PM

South Africa plans to boost its rapidly developing economy by investing into major coal mining and coal power plants projects.

According to PennEnergy, "There could be a growing demand for new coal mines in South Africa, according to a study by Cape Town consultant group The Green House."

South Africa is reliant on coal. 85% of its electricity nationwide comes from coal power plants.

As reported by PennEnergy, "The report suggests that South Africa may need to invest up to $9 billion for the development of new coal mining operations to adequately supply the nation’s coal-fired power plants. Findings indicate that with increasing demand, a fuel shortage could be seen as early as 2015."

Eskom intends to invest over $50 billion until 2020 on coal power plants.
