BEIJING: An imam at a mosque located in Northwestern China was handing out free food when a herd of Muslims had rushed in to grab the goods. A stampede ensued in which 14 were killed and 10 were critically wounded.
The mosque is in Xiji town, Ningxia region, which is 200 miles northwest of Xian, Shaanxi Province.
According to the Telegraph, "The stampede occurred around 1:00 pm on Sunday while traditional food was being handed out to people attending an event to commemorate a late religious leader, Xinhua news agency said, citing the local government."
Muslims in the region have earned recognition for growing wine, and French luxury group, LVMH, operates a highly profitable wine vinyard in Ningxia.
