Islamist politicians in Indonesia are asking, "where's the beef?" That's because they can enjoy the benefits of trips to hotels to meet prostitutes and receive hefty bribes from foreign beef importers.
Channel NewsAsia reports that, "Clandestine hotel room sex, money laundering and huge bribes to import beef evokes a seedy, criminal underworld rather than conservative politicians in the world's most populous Muslim nation."
Umar S. Bakry, former pollster Lembaga Survei Nasional, is quoted as saying that, "The scandal ... has given as a whole Islamic parties a bad image."
According to Channel NewsAsia, "But they all feature in a racy scandal that has shattered the clean image of Indonesia's biggest Islamic party and could further damage already-unpopular Muslim parties at national polls next year."
The scandal has been dubbed as "Beefgate" in the Indonesian media.
