Mobsters hailing from the South Korean port town of Mokpo, North Jeolla Province have launched schemes to join sudent councils at South Korean universities so they can extort cash, terrorize professors and provide illicit drugs and prostitutes on campus
According to the JoongAng Daily, "Students are increasingly turning their backs on student councils at local universities, with some colleges terminating them altogether. These developments are part of the aftermath of a series of scandals in recent months implicating these boards, which gang members have infiltrated to extort school funds and commit other fraud."
Getting elected to student councils has become a lucrative business for the Mokpo Mafia. They have succeeded in embezzling hundreds of thousands of US dollars from universities nationwide.
As reported by JoongAng Daily, "To ensure gang members are elected to student councils, syndicates use intimidation to force other candidates to withdraw from the race. They also receive bribes from businesses vying for contracts to host school events. This year alone, gang members were found to have been running six student bodies at local universities."
The Gwangju Metropolitan Police allege that a 24-year-old man is the so-called godfather of the Mokpo Mafia. He was recently expelled from Dongkak College.
