Here's what's interesting. Columbia's Alumni Corner newsletter published a letter in January/February 2009 that was written by Phil Boerner '84, who claims that Obama spent most of his time at the university’s library. However, a Columbia Librarian in the early 80s doesn't recall meeting Obama. Mr. Boerner writes, "Barack has said that he spent a lot of time in the library while at Columbia and one reason for this was that our apartment had irregular heat, and we didn't enjoy hanging out there once the weather was cold … When the heat wasn’t on, we sometimes sat sometimes sat with sleeping bags or blankets wrapped around ourselves and read our school books. We also didn’t have regular hot water and sometimes used the Columbia gym for showers." Jamie Miller, a mother of five who lives in Beit Shemesh and remains active with the alumni association, claims she attends reunions in New York every five years, but she doesn’t remember meeting Obama. She said, "I was a cheerleader, so I knew all the jocks. I was in the marching band, I worked on the yearbook, and I was involved in student government, so I knew everyone. But I never saw him around." Apparently, none of Obama's Israeli Columbia '83 recall meeting the young president. Additionally, Obama's photo does not appear in the Columbia Yearbook, according to a member of the Columbia Yearbook Committee.
