The Houston Chronicle reports that, "Dallas-owned gas reserves are being produced and marketed while the City Council debates allowing gas drilling on its land. The bizarre circumstances that led to the production of Dallas gas highlighted the complexities of the horizontal drilling that allows operators to extract once out-of-reach oil and gas from dense rock layers." In a bid to lessen the income disparity between South Dallas and North Dallas residents, City Hall is considering the likelihood of granting gas drilling permits to South Dallasites, as well as developing a new oil & gas economic zone for impoverished neighborhoods in the city.
