Crooks Praise Newspaper Listing of Gun Owners Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Mon, Jan 7, 2013, 01:13 AM

Adapt Burglar.jpgBurglars prefer to rob homes where they know the homeowner does not have a gun. Home invasions can be life-threatening, so it's better to rob homes where they can't get shot at. Accordingly, criminals are praising a newspaper’s decision to publish the names and addresses of gun owners.

Fox News reports that, "reformed crooks say the New York newspaper that published a map of names and addresses of gun owners did a great service – their old cronies in the burglary trade."

The Journal-News, a daily newspaper serving the New York suburbs of Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, published the information online, which will be very helpful to thieves.

Fox News quotes Walter T. Shaw, 65, a former burglar and jewel thief who the FBI blames for more than 3,000 break-ins that netted him approximately $70 million in the 1960s and 1970s, as saying that, "that was the most asinine article I've ever seen. Having a list of who has a gun is like gold – why rob that house when you can hit the one next door, where there are no guns?"

He added, "what they did was insanity." Shaw is author of the book, 'License to Steal,' a memoir of his criminal history.
