U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson-Lee (D.-Tx.) contends that bullet-proof retractable doors, not armed guards, can protect students amidst deadly shootouts. The Houston Chronicle reports that, "according to the Houston Democrat, 'schools should be ‘a safe refuge for our children and teachers,' which can be achieved with equipping our schools with retractable doors that would turn classrooms into panic rooms."
Sheila Jackson Lee said, "we should be looking at bullet-proof glass for schools. We should be looking at a system of a sealed door, that when there is an alarm that there is a possible intrusion, those doors come down. We are sophisticated enough to build schools with that kind of technology."
According to the Houston Chronicle, "during an interview with KPFT, Jackson Lee said that such doors would be 'an excellent response' to a shooter such as Adam Lanza, who was responsible for the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting. ‘He literally shot down the door,’ added Jackson Lee."
However, Gov. Rick Perry and state Rep.-elect Jason Villalba contend that a better method to prevent future shootings in public schools would be to permit teachers to carry firearms.

EVERYBODY seems sick and tired of this Congress and Boehner's leadership. Congressional approval ratings are below 25 percent. Yet if you ask an individual about their congressional representative, they will say that s/he is great. What gives? When we stop electing clueless and challenged individuals who do not know the meaning of the word compromise, we will keep getting what we are getting. Whether you are a Democrat or Republican, find someone with sense and integrity to represent you! Invest in a 20 or 30 something's career early and support them to the top. We are the only ones who can transform this system. New York representatives deserve high props for holding Boehner's feet to the fire on relief after Hurricane Sandy. This catastrophe happened more that 2 months ago, and yet there are still people who have no electricity, eating at shelters, sleeping in their cars. What goes? Now Boehner says he will bring this to a vote January 15. Why the delay? Do we believe him? It is good that we did not go off the fiscal cliff, but President Obama gave more than he got in this deal, and there are 60 days before we have to deal with this brinkmanship again. Our Pres is an amazing leader, but he is not the greatest negotiator. Make sure your member of Congress, D or R knows how you feel about this. We can't have another decrease in the bond rating.
