by Tom McGregor    Sun, Dec 23, 2012, 10:55 PM

Argentina Copahue.jpgChile is raising the alert level for the Copahue volcano to red, the highest possible.

The BBC News reports that, "the 3,000m (10,000ft.) is in Argentina's southwestern Neuquen province, near the Chilean border. It began spewing ash and gas on Saturday morning."

Authorities in Argentina have informed residents of local villages to be aware of their circumstances.

According to the BBC, "many people have already left the area as a precaution. Ash has been raining down on both sides of the border."

Roads have been cleared for possible evacuation.
