Russia to Boost ‘Soft Power’ Diplomacy Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Mon, Jul 9, 2012, 08:07 PM

President Vladimir Putin has requested that diplomats use more soft-power techniques to upgrade Russia’s “distorted” image abroad.

Moscow Times reports that, “speaking to the Foreign Ministry’s annual assembly of ambassadors on Monday, Putin said that envoys should add new technologies, so-called ‘soft powers’ to their traditional work methods.”

He contends that the nation’s image abroad seems lopsided, due to a failure to communicate its message clearly.

Moscow Times quotes Putin as saying that, “so far, we must admit that Russia’s image abroad is by and large not being formed by us. For that reason, it is distorted and does not reflect the real situation in the country and its contributions to global civilization, science and culture.”

He expressed frustration for Russia losing the global public relations’ battle for urging peaceful restrain in the U.S.
