Russian diplomats are refusing to grant President Barack Obama’s request to grant asylum to Russia for the embattled Syrian President. Apparently, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton even visited the country recently to push forward on the diplomatic maneuver.
According to Ria-Novosti news agency, “Western countries are trying to talk Russia into inviting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and granting him political asylum, but Moscow opposes such plans, the Kommersant business daily reported on Wednesday, citing a Russian diplomatic source.” The daily wrote, “Western countries, first of all the United States, are actively trying to convince Moscow that it should grant the Syrian leader political asylum.” The source added, “(but) we have not had any such plans.” As reported by RiaNovosti, “Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in March that Moscow was not offering political asylum to al-Assad.” Kommersant’s source in the diplomatic mission of a Western nation would neither confirm nor deny the report in regards to the offer allegedly made to Russia.
