Japan Returns to Nuclear Power Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Sun, Jun 17, 2012, 06:19 PM
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda orders nuclear reactors to go back online. It will restart two nuclear reactors – the first to go back online since all the nation’s plants were shut down following last year’s Fukushima crisis.

The BBC News reports that, “reactors at the Ohi plant in central Fukui prefecture will be switched on in three weeks officials said.”

PM Noda seeks support for the move contending that the country faces a summer of power shortages. Nonetheless, widespread discontent over nuclear power remains.

According to the BBC, “Japan’s 50 reactors were shut down for routine maintenance after the meltdown at the Fukushima power plant, which was triggered by a massive earthquake and tsunami.”

Mr. Noda made the announcement after Fukui prefecture Gov. Kazumasa Nishikawa offered his approval for the decision.
