Despite a massive City of Dallas budget deficit and layoffs of thousands of DISD teachers in recent years due to so-called accounting errors, education officials in Dallas deem it necessary to hire a public relations director for $185,000/year to explain why DISD bureaucrats deserve six-figure salaries.
Dallas CBS DFW reports that, “the Dallas Independent School district has already announced an estimated $38 million budget deficit for the 2012-2013 school year – but four cabinet members will see salaries that range from $182,000 to $220,000.”
However, the district’s 11,000 hard-working teachers would not receive any pay raises. In order to save cash, school board trustees voted in favor of shutting down 11 schools. Additionally, custodians employed by DISD are forced to accept a 10 percent pay cut or risk losing their jobs.
“But,” according to CBS DFW, “newly hired Superintendent Mike Miles is paying six-figure salaries to top level administrators, despite those budget constraints. Miles recruited his Communications chief from his former district in Colorado Springs. Jennifer Sprague earned $86,000 annually with the Harrison School district. Her salary with Dallas ISD will be $185,000”
NEA-Dallas President Angela Davis said Wednesday that, “it is a slap in the face to your teachers.”
