President Barack Obama has ordered his Cabinet members to hit the re-elect Obama campaign trail and go fundraising. He’s using taxpayer-funded trips to meld policy and politics, which some critics call unethical.
According to Politico, “a half-dozen Cabinet members have made more than 85 trips this year to electoral battlegrounds such as Colorado, Florida, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania, according to a Politico review of public speeches and news clippings.”
This year, six Cabinet officials visited the swing states for roughly half of their travel.
As reported by Politico, “the rhetoric from the secretaries has at times detoured into fiery defenses that echo the campaign messaging of Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. In addition, some secretaries – Housing and Urban Development’s Shaun Donovan and Education’s Arne Duncan – have helped the re-election effort by engaging in off-the-clock fundraising and messaging of local donors.”
Apparently, three online fundraising solicitations from the Obama campaign mentioned the names of Duncan for recent events, which raised red flags for Ana Galindo-Marrone, chief of the Hatch Act Unit in the Office of Special Counsel.
