Battle Royale in Australia Labor Party Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Wed, Feb 22, 2012, 10:01 PM

Australia Prime Minister Julia Gillard is calling for a Labor leadership ballot. She faces a tussle with Kevin Rudd.

The BBC News reports that, “the move comes hours after Mr. Rudd, who was ousted as PM by Ms Gillard in 2010, resigned as foreign minister. Mr. Gillard said she would ‘go to the backbench’ and renounce future bids for the leadership, and called for him to do the same.”

Upon hearing the announcement, Mr. Rudd flew back to Brisbane from Washington D.C. Ms. Gillard speaking to reporters announced the ballot would be conducted at 10 am Australia East Coast time on Monday.

She said, we need a leadership ballot to settle this question once and for all. Australians are rightly sick of this.”

According to the BBC, “she said she anticipated that Mr. Rudd ‘will also be a candidate in this ballot,’ and said she expected to win both the ballot and the next election, due in 2013.”

She added, “I am confident that … we can win that election provided we use Monday’s opportunity to end this for all time and then we get on with the job of delivering good government for the Australian people.”
