Sheila Jackson Lee Grants Earmarks to Hubby Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Tue, Feb 7, 2012, 07:32 PM
U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D.-Tx.) loves to hog the spotlight and is passionate about using her Congressional office to appropriate millions of dollars in federal grant money to pork barrel projects that pad the wallet of her beloved husband.

According to the Washington Post, "some members of Congress send tax dollars to companies and community groups where their spouses, children and parents work as salaried employees, lobbyists or board members, according to an examination of federal disclosure forms and local public records by the Washington Post."

Mrs. Jackson Lee advocates so-called 'Cougar-funding' by funneling millions in earmarks to the University of Houston while Elwyn C. Lee, her husband, is running the school as a senior administrator. The congresswoman or staff have coordinated meetings with top university officials to negotiate funding for school programs.

The Washington Post cites a school official writing to a staff assistant in May 2011 in an email that was obtained through a public records request saying that, "we greatly appreciate the Congresswoman's support over the years and hope she can help us again this year with these requests."

As reported by the Washington Post, "Elwyn Lee has worked at the university since 1978. Twenty years later, he had risen to dual executive roles: vice president of student affairs for the university and vice chancellor of student affairs for the university system. Last March, he was named as the university's vice president for community relations and institutional access."

Mr. Lee was able to double his salary to $210,491 a year since he started in 1994. Mrs. Lee entered the halls of Congress in 1995. She garnered earmarks totaling $5.3 million for the University of Houston since 2009, according to her financial disclosure forms.

This story rates no attention whatsoever. If Ms. Lee wants to crank up her hubby's salary with earmarks, no one cares. That's why we work so hard and pay our taxes, so Sheila and her husband can rake hundreds of thousands of dollars off the top and go along on their merry way.
