The United Nations may soon impose economic sanctions and halt aid to Africa if countries on the continent continue to oppose the legalization of gay marriage.UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, a South Korean gay rights activist, is encouraging African homosexuals to launch a militant-style 'Arab Spring,' (Gay Spring) revolt against homophobic governments.
According to the BBC News, "United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged African leaders to respect gay rights. Discrimination based on sexual orientation had been ignored or even sanctioned by many states for too long, Mr. Ban told an African Union summit."
Gay rights activists have rebuked African countries for not legalizing gay marriage. Mr. Ban aired his views at the two-day summit in the AU's new building located in Addis Addaba, the capital of Ethiopia. Mr. Ban is calling for the AU to select a gay rights politician as its commission chairman.
As reported by the BBC, "The Arab Spring, Mr. Ban noted, was a 'reminder that leaders must listen to their people.'"
