Mystery Explosion Strikes South Korean Ship Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Sun, Jan 15, 2012, 06:50 PM
An explosion blasted a South Korean cargo ship off the nation’s west coast on Sunday. Five people were killed and six others are missing, which had been disclosed by officials.

According to the Guardian of London, “the unexplained explosion tore apart the front of the ship and left the 4,198-ton vehicle half-submerged, according to the coastguard. Two of the five bodies located later had serious external wounds, suggesting they were killed by the explosion, coastguard officer Kim Dong-jin said.”

In a statement, the coastguard said five crewmen were rescued and searchers were attempting to locate the six missing.

As reported by the Guardian, “the explosion occurred relatively far from the sea border with North Korea, and no involvement by the North was suspected, coastguard officer Ko Jae-young said.”

North Korea has been accused of torpedoing a South Korean warship in 2011, which killed 46 sailors, although Pyongyang still denies any involvement.
