Gov. Christie Blasts Public Broadcasting as Soviet-Style PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Tue, Jun 7, 2011, 01:48 AM

Aparatchik Christie.jpgGov. Chris Christie of New Jersey compared government funding of public broadcasting to the olden days of the Soviet Union. He made this statement before announcing a deal that will sell the state’s public broadcasting network to New York’s WNET, which was first reported by MyFoxPhilly.com.

Fox News reports that, “New York Public Radio will acquire four radio stations under the agreement. At a press conference in Trenton, Christie said the government ought to stay out of broadcasting, and the relationship in New Jersey should have ended decades ago.”

Gov. Christie said, “in my view, that should have ended with the Soviet Union. It’s ending here in New Jersey a little later than the fall of the Berlin Wall. But we’re getting there.”

According to Fox News, “under the agreement, New Jersey will hold on to the broadcasting licenses, but the TV arm of the NJN would be run from New York and its radio station would operate from Philadelphia. If approved, the deal would be effective July 1.”

New Jersey state lawmakers, the FCC and New Jersey Public Broadcasting Authority must reportedly approve the new partnership that may be met with some resistance since 130 employees would be out of a job and would have to re-apply for work. Also, critics question whether the quality of journalism which would be produced on such a reduction of staff.
