by Tom McGregor    Mon, Apr 4, 2011, 07:18 PM

Air Bahrain.jpgThe United Nations boldly announced on its official website that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon engaged in a telephone conversation with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran to discuss the “situation in Libya, Bahrain and Yemen.”

According to the UN News Center, “during the telephone call yesterday, Mr. Ban reiterated his concern about the continued instability in Bahrain and Yemen, and underlined his call for maximum restraint and the importance of protecting civilians and the need to respect human rights.”

Mr. Ban emphasized that peaceful dialogue on certain political, economic and social reform is the only method to sustainable peace and sustainability, as revealed through a statement by his spokesman.

As reported by the UN News Center, “Bahrain and Yemen have been jolted by persitent demonstrations by citizens calling for political reform. The protests have often resulted in violence, with dozens of people having lost their lives when security forces in both countries used excessive force against the demonstrators.”

Mr. Ban informed Mr. Ahmadinejad that the UN’s Special Envoy for Libya, Abdel Elah Al-Khatib, is also coordinating UN Middle East policies along with the League of Arab States and the African Union.
