Grandpa Mafioso Gets Jail Time Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Sat, Jan 15, 2011, 03:51 AM

Al Franzese.jpgJohn “Sonny” Franzese hobnobbed with Frank Sinatra, held court at the CopacaBana nightclub, and swapped tall tales with fighter Jake LaMotta. Yet, the last chapter in the colorful saga of the now Doddering Don who aided in building the glamorous myth of the American mafia will likely end in a prison cell.

The New York Post reports that, “Colombo underboss John “Sonny” Franzese, 93, was sentenced to eight years in prison for shaking down the Hustler and Penthouse strip clubs in Manhattan. The soonest he could be released, based on good behavior and time served, would be when he turns 100.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Cristina Posa told Brooklyn federal court Judge Brian Cogan that, “he is largely responsible for the glamorization of the Mafia over the past century. For him to die now as a criminal in jail is not an inappropriate response for the lifestyle he lived.”

Apparently, ‘Sonny’ Franzese was ratted out by his own son.

Authorities claim the ruthless gangster might be responsible for 50-100 murders, and once offered a terrifying “recipe” for how to dispose of a hacked-up corpse. Yet, defense lawyer, Robert Lind, contended that since Franzese’s advanced age and array of illnesses – he’s hard of hearing, suffers from kidney ailments and a bad heart – a long sentence seems pointless. He labeled talk of gangland carnage as mere “pathetic boasting.”

According to the New York Post, “his family tried – and failed – to portray the aging thug as a changed man. His granddaughter Kristen Franzese, 21, said he was ‘kind, considerate, warm and funny.”
