Perry Set to Lead GOP Governors’ Association PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Fri, Nov 12, 2010, 08:41 PM

Gov. Rick Perry of Texas anticipates to be selected next week as chairman of the Republican Governors’ Association, a Perry aide disclosed on Friday.

The group currently led by Gov. Haley Barbour of Mississippi, is expected to vote in favor of Perry at their weeklong meeting in San Diego.

The Houston Chronicle reports that, “Perry spokesman Mark Miner said the Texas governor has been lobbying for the job so he can continue to champion his pet issue of state’s rights and limited federal government.”

Perry has been frequently mentioned in the run-up to the 2012 presidential campaign, but he has contended that he’s not interested in running.

Since winning re-election to a third full-term, Perry has been promoting his new book on the importance of state’s rights, ‘Fed Up! Our Fight to Save America from Washington.’

Perry is pointing to the book and its assault on Washington as evidence that he doesn’t want to campaign for president.

According to the Chronicle, “in the bok, Perry calls Social Security a ‘failure,’ and compares it to an illegal Ponzi scheme. He also criticizes the modern implementation of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, saying Texas and other states – most of them from the South – should no longer have to get pre-clearance from federal authorities to make significant changes affecting voting.”

This would be Perry’s second stint as leader of the association.

The RGA grants campaign cash to and promotes Republican candidates for governor. The association enjoyed an unusually good year in 2010, picking up governorships in at least 11 states where Democrats were holding the seats
