Drunk Baboons Invade South Africa Vineyards PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Sun, Aug 29, 2010, 09:38 PM

Alcohol Baboons.jpgCrime is plaguing the nation of South Africa, and even baboons are participating in criminal rampages. Apparently, drunk baboons are terrorizing Cape Town’s exclusive suburbs.

The Daily Telegraph of London reports that, “the sun is setting over South Africa’s oldest vineyard and the last of the wine-tasting tourists are climbing onto their buses. But one large family group has no intention of leaving – and there is little the management can do about it.”

In the heart of Cape Town’s wine country, Groot Constantia, can adapt to inebriated holidaymakers. Yet, it is lecherous baboons that have developed a taste for its grapes that the wine producers are contending with.

Dozens of Cape Baboons gather to strip the ancient vines every day – the sauvignon blanc grapes are especially a favorite – before traveling into the mountains to sleep-off a hangover. Some drunk baboons, who sample the tempting fruit that has fermented in the sun, pass out intoxicated and don’t return home.

Jean Naude, general manager at the vineyard that is celebrating its 325th birthday this year, said, “they are not just eating our grapes, they are raiding our kitchens and ripping the thatch off the roofs. They are becoming increasingly bold and destructive.”

Mr. Naue has deployed guards banging sticks and waving plastic snakes, but met only with limited success, and not even a horn blast of a vuvuzela, the plastic horn made notorious at the 2010 World Cup, appears to frighten them.

According to the Telegraph, “it is not just the vineyards in South Africa which are under siege, however, but also the exclusive neighboring suburb of Constantia, home to famous residents including Earl Spencer, Wilbur Smith and Nelson Mandela.”

Stop reading my mind, rufuslevin! It will corrupt you.

I had the same thought when I read the headline. But, I confess you expressed it in a much nicer way.

Are these drunk baboons some of the very same ones who are in charge of the US House and Senate; or are these some of their close relatives?
