According to the Seoul Times, “Nepal is all set to welcome gays, lesbians, transvestites and transsexuals across the world on August 25, 2010, coinciding with a festival called Gayatra (festival of the cow), the traditional festival which commemorates with ridiculing and fooling the important people of the society.” A vocal lawmaker of South Asia, Sunil Panta, who also is the chair of Blue Diamond Society (BDS), an organization fighting for the rights of transgender in the country, is holding a gay pride parade on Aug. 25. In the Gayatra, a flood of jokes, satire, mockery and lampooning can be observed all across the nation. Almost everyone in Nepal participate in the age-old tradition in which they dress up and wear masks. The festival is filled with jokes and songs. As reported by the Seoul Times, “Panta said that the organization is expecting participation of around 1,800 gays, lesbians, transvestites and transsexuals in the parade on the streets of Kathmandu on the day of Gayatra.” Panta added, “the occasion of Gayatra has been chosen as it is the centuries-old Hindu festival when Nepali men dress up in women’s attire. We will make the event international this time. Panta announced that the parade will feature live music and a candle-lit memorial service for HIV victims. Pradip Khadka, a BDS member, said, ‘we have received a positive response from some Bollywood actors, too.” To read the entire article from the Seoul Times, link here:

An organization, promoting a gay parade in Nepal on August 25, is boasting that some Bollywood actors will attend the festival. In the past, Bollywood was recognized for producing films that encouraged traditional family values. Apparently, that is no longer the case.
