Hundreds of FBI Agents Accused of Test Cheating PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Wed, Jul 28, 2010, 09:21 AM

Agent FBI.jpgThe Department of Justice is investigating whether hundreds of FBI agents cheated on a test related to new rules permitting the bureau to conduct surveillance and open cases without evidence that a crime was committed.

According to the Houston Chronicle, “in some instances, agents took the open-book test together, violating rules that they take it alone. Others finished the lengthy exam unusually quickly, current and former officials said.”

FBI agents in Columbia, S.C. printed in advance the test to utilize as a study guide, as disclosed by a letter to the inspector general from the FBI Agents Association that summarized the investigation. Also, the inspector general confirmed that an investigation is underway by former and current officials who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the case.

Konrad Motoyka, the association’s president, wrote May 13 in the letter obtained by the Associated Press, said, “there are similar stories for practically every office, demonstrating the pervasive confusion and miscommunication that existed.”

Agents could be disciplined or even terminated depending on the outcome of the investigation.

As reported by the Chronicle, “FBI Director Robert Mueller was scheduled to testify Wednesday before Congress, where the new guidelines and the cheating scandal were expected to come up.”

After years of collecting phone records and e-mails without court approval, the inquiry may further blacken the reputation of the FBI. The nefarious scandal already has upended management at one of the country’s largest field offices.

As of late Tuesday, the FBI had no comment on the investigation.

Motyka’s letter calls for the inspector general to focus, instead on what he believes is the ‘systemic failure’ of administering the test without consistent rules.

If this story is accurate, and I condition my response to that huge "IF", then it is one of the most outrageous and disappointing news stories I've ever read.

I would have sworn a death oath that FBI agents would never cheat on a test. I mean, if you can't trust the FBI to be honest, who can you trust?

First of all, who in the FIB (or anywhere else) is stupid enough to cheat on an open book test? That is a level of absurdly dumb that is off the charts.

But, why would FBI supervisors conduct a test in violation of the testing authority's requirements?

I find disturbing and immensely saddening the idea that we have a significant number of FBI agents who are corrupt, dishonest, AND stupid! That's a horrible thought beyond normal contemplation.

So, I hope there are mistakes in this story. If there are not, these agents need to be fired and prosecuted for being corrupt and dishonest, and it's just too bad you can prosecute gross stupidity.

What is this country coming to when the White House puts a tax cheat as head of the Treasury Department, Democrats appoint a tax cheat to chair the tax-writing committee in the House, their appointment to chair the Senate committee overseeing government finance is getting sweetheart loans from one of the culprits he regulates, and FBI agents cheat on an open book test!

The FBI is not the Old FBI anymore. I once had an employee that was crooked, and I fired her. Next thing I knew, the FBI interviewed me for a background check on hiring her as an agent. She not only got hired, but her boyfriend did too...and he was worse.

Nope...not the same bunch.
