The Los Angeles Times reports that, “the Massachusetts senator is under fire for docking his brand new $7-million yacht in Rhode Island. It’s not illegal to moor your boat there or anything. It’s just that Rhode Island doesn’t have a boat sales and use tax anymore.” Yet, if the luxury-style yacht that apparently boasts an “Edwardian-style, glossy varnished teak interior, two VIP main cabins and pilothouse filled with a wet bar and cold war storage” were docked in his home state, then he must pay nearly $500,000 in his home state taxes. Nevertheless, Kerry spokesman David Wade contends that Kerry has done nothing illegal. Sen. Kerry’s docking ‘Isabel,’ (the name of his yacht) in Rhode Island, since it was bought there. Sen. Kerry told a Boston TV station on Friday that, “let’s not get silly here. We pay enormous taxes to the state of Massachusetts, and there is nothing illegal here.” According to the LA Times, “whatever the case, it looks like Kerry might have to pay the taxes after all. The Boston Herald reports that the yacht was spotted in Nantucket over the Fourth of July holiday. The law says that ‘if a boat owner berths the vessel in Massachusetts waters within six months of purchasing the boat, there is a ‘presumption of use,’ and the owner must fork over the 6.25 percent sales tax to the commonwealth.” Sen. Kerry’s spokesman responded that if they owe any taxes, they’ll pay them. Wade said, “Sen. Kerry and his family always comply with tax law, and if any taxes are owed, of course, they will be paid.” To read the entire article from the Los Angeles Times, link here:

written by Austin , July 25, 2010 Why is tax avoidance a virtue when practiced by the McCains and the Palins and "Joe the Plumber" but a sin of some sort when practiced by Kerry?
...
written by R , July 26, 2010 Because Palin and McCain and Joe don't go around saying how it's our patriotic duty to pay higher taxes. Oh, and rufuslevin, HE SERVED IN VIETNAM.

written by rufuslevin , July 27, 2010 Lots of people "served in Vietnam"...he became a turncoat to the nation when he returned. Kerry has NEVER done anything of any merit, including make a living for his family. He merely MARRIED into wealth BOTH times, and lives off the women. His political career was merely because of his coattailing the Kennedy family. John Kerry is a blowhard arrogant elitist nobody. Palin held down a responsible government executive position...successfully. McCain is..well, McCain..enough said either way, and Joe the Plumber is a creation of the media....he too is a nobody. Paying taxes is patriotic only depending upon what the tax is based upon, and how "fair" the tax is for every individual. Rich people who do nothing but live the good life off of their money should be taxed higher than rich folks who keep investing their money in American Businesses that produce profits and domestic jobs. The folks that make money on purely speculation on stock and commodities should be taxed to the max...they produce NOTHING of value, and often destroy the value of other folks hard earned assets.

written by Ken Dickson , July 28, 2010 Rufuslevin, you are wrong about stocks! Those investors create capital that creates business & they should be rewarded for doing that! IT IS NOT A SIN TO MAKE A PROFIT! Kerry knows nothing but left-wing policy that he hopes does not apply to his wife's fortune! He was not a hero, but a fraud, regardless what the Dems said & the voters agreed! Write comment

Sen. John Kerry (D.-Ma.) hails from the state of Massachusetts, which is commonly referred to as ‘Taxachusetts.’ John Kerry could best be described as a tax-and-spend, very liberal and ultra-rich United States senator. Nevertheless, even Sen. Kerry takes advantage of any opportunity to reduce his tax bills.
