South Koreans are gung ho with their hatred for Japan; so it comes as no surprise that a psychotic South Korean native would assault Tokyo’s ambassador to Seoul. One wonders how long it will take before the assailant is portrayed as a heroic figure by his fellow citizens in national Web sites.
The Joong Ang Ilbo reports that, “(South Korea) Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan phoned Japanese Ambassador Toshinori Shigeie Wednesday night to apologize after a Korean man hurled a lump of concrete at him at the Korea-Japan Future Forum.”
The terrorist, Kim Ki-joon, who identified himself as a citizen activist promoting Korea’s territorial sovereignty on Dokdo, which is called Takeshima in Japan, threw a cell phone piece of concrete at Shigeie after he gave a speech at the forum Wednesday in the Press Center in downtown Seoul.
Kim Young-sun, the South Korean foreign ministry spokesman, announced in a briefing yesterday that, “Minister Yu made a phone call to Ambassador Shigeie to express his regrets. What happened last night was completely unacceptable and we are feeling very regretful about it.”
The spokesman revealed that Seoul called for police to increase security surrounding the Japanese embassy and the ambassador. The Japanese government has not yet launched an official complaint.
According to the Joong Ang Ilbo, ‘during a question session after shigeie’s speech, Kim started yelling that Korea was divided because of Japan and suddenly threw a chunk of concrete at the ambassador. Shigeie avoided the attack by stepping off the podium. But Mayomi Horie, his translator, was hit in the hand and taken to a nearby hospital. She was sent home later that night.”
The 50-year-old Kim was arrested by the cops.
