Uproar over Indonesia Transgender Wedding Fraud Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Tue, May 18, 2010, 12:23 PM

Alterina Hofan.jpgJane Hadipoespito really thought she was marrying the man of her dreams until she later discovered that her husband was born with a different gender identity.

According to the BBC News, “a man has gone on trial in Indonesia accused of falsifying his gender identity in order to marry a woman.”

Doctors claim Alterina Hofan has the rare condition Klinefelter’s syndrome, where a male has an additional x chromosome that makes him look more like a woman.”

He stated that he officially altered his identity documents to claim he was a male, but his wife’s parents are accusing him of paperwork fraud.

Mr. or Mrs. Hofan (?) has been taken into custody and is being held in solitary confinement in a women’s prison.

As reported by the BBC, “the BBC’s Karishma Vaswani in Jakarta says the case has incited public debate over the treatment of transgendered people in Indonesia. Mr. (or Mrs.) Hofan’s mother told the BBC that when he was born, doctors said he was a girl, so he was registered and brought up as such.”

Yet, when he was two-years-old he started to develop male genitalia and always tended to behave like a boy, she stated.

Hofan has disclosed that he always considered himself to be a man and as he grew older, he underwent numerous operations to reduce the more effeminate aspects of his appearance.

He married Jane Hadipoespito in the U.S. in 2008, but her mother denounced the unusual marriage circumstances. She filed a lawsuit against Hofan alleging that he falsified documents and misled her daughter.
