White Opposses Transparent Texas Gov. Race PDF Print E-mail

Bill Income.jpgFormer Houston Mayor Bill White refuses to match Gov. Rick Perry of Texas on personal financial disclosure. The Republican governor has filled out the state's personal financial disclosure statements since 1990 and released his personal income tax returns since about 1996.

The Houston Chronicle reports that, "so it made sense while talking to Democratic gubernatorial nominee former Houston Mayor Bill White today that I would ask him for his income tax returns during his tenure as Houston's chief executive."

White note that he has filed the Metropolitan of Houston financial disclosure forms, yet he declined to pledge to relelease his income tax returns as Gov. Perry has done. White claimed he would expose information on the returns if there were specific questions.

In the interview, Mr. White downgrades the Houston Chronicle reporter by calling him a "boy," even though he deserves to be recognized as a man. The former mayor was asked about releasing his income tax return back to 2003.

The Chronicle quotes Mr. White as saying that, "we'll give you and others information that you ask about, boy, since 2003. I've had most all of that in the financial statement. But I have been, there has been, during much of that time a partnership interest and a partnership return attached to the tax return. But I'll provide the vaious adjusted gross income and stuff like that, and a lot of it, but not those schedules."

Mr. White explained, "I'm a partner, we're, other people are partners in those businesses, and those tax returns are proprietary."

UPDATE: Before the White story was posted on the Dallas Blog, R.G. Ratcliff was contacted, seeking comment on the "boy" reference. He did not call back until after the story was posted. He explained that he doesn't believe that White intentionally degraded him when he referred to him as "boy."

Okay, so let's get this right:

First, White clearly agreed to release all the parts of the Income taxes personal to him, but not the documentation that is proprietary to his partners.

Until you find me a Republican Governor who was a partner in a business partner who backstabbed his partners by publically filing the confidential portions of the Partnership's taxes, you are dealing Apples and Oranges.

Certainly, given that we are months away from the election, taking more than 5-seconds to review his fiduciary duties to his partners before he releases what he can is not playing hiding the ball.

Second, I think most people reading the transcript or listening to the audio file included on the Chronicle website would agree that he did not call the reporter "boy."

Please read the transcript in context and/or listen to the audio file of the interview on the Houston Chronicle website.

For those of us who grew up in Texas, the word "boy" in front of a word while in the middle of responding to a question is often used as a filler to show that the person is thinking about the answer and having some difficulty finding the detail needed to answer. THis use of "boy" is not a reference to the questioner.

A similar Texas use of the word "boy" would be the expression "Boy Howdy" as an exclamation. The word "Boy" can also be used as an interjection -"Boy what a game." Nobody considers these uses of the word boy as calling a reporter or the person you are addressing as a "boy."

It is clear by listening to the audio file that White is using the word "boy" as a filler to indicate he is searching his brain to try and remember how long a timeframe is responsive to the question.

While I understand that many on this blog will desire to attack White's positions. Please let's not spin stories so grandly that there is an invention of facts that do not exist. He did not call the reporter "Boy."

Bill White has some shady dealings he doesn't want to reveal. Deals in the Middle East. ACORN-related deals all across Houston. Ponzi schemes that would make Enron look like angels. Bill White is a scumbag who got rich off the taxpayers, and everyone who has been around him in Houston knows he is dirty, dirty, dirty.
