Now, President Barack Obama is following in the foreign policy footsteps of Mr. Carter, and China believes that this represents an opportunity for its nation to surpass the U.S. as the world's number one superpower. Beijing recognizes that Obama wants to be perceived as a global diplomat for the U.S. and U.N., rather than a military force to be reckoned with. Hence, Beijing can build-up its military without fear of repurcussions from the White House. According to the Washington Times, "recent statements by Chinese military officials are raising concerns among U.S. analysts that the communist government in Beijing is shifting its oft-stated 'peaceful rise' policy toward an aggressive, anti-U.S. posture." A government-approved book by Senior Col. Liu Mingfu is the most recent signal of warning signs as it urges China to "sprint" toward becoming the world's most powerful state. Larry M. Wortzel, a China affairs specialist who until recently was co-chairman of the congressional U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, said, "although this book is one of many U.S. China-watchers that the People's Liberation Army's rapid military growth is not designed to challenge the United States as a global power or the U.S. military." As reported by the Washington Times, "a Reuter's report on Col. Liu's book, 'The China Dream,' appeared Tuesday in the Communist Party's newspaper People's Daily. It quotd the book as stating that China and the United States are in "competition to be the leading country, a conflict over who rises and falls to dominate the world." Col. Liu raises a compelling argument considering that the U.S. must contend with a federal government budget deficit that has grown exponentially under the Obama administration. Also, China holds about $1 trillion in 'U.S. debt securities.' written by furrpiece , March 06, 2010 Barack Obama is serving Jimmy Carter's second term. The problem is that Obama is not as smart, and not as honest, as Carter. I think both are equally inept, but I gave Carter credit for being well-intentioned, something no rational person would ascribe to Obama. When it comes to foreign policy, both get an F.

written by ElHombre , March 08, 2010 Time for some facts that conservatives keep ignoring in their ongoing quest to keep their collective heads buried in their... let's be nice and say sand: "Beijing can build-up its military without fear of repurcussions from the White House." The US spends more on its defense than the other top 9 countries combined. China has a looong way to go before they can be taken seriously, especially on a strategic level. So conservatives can quit wetting their panties. "...the U.S. must contend with a federal government budget deficit that has grown exponentially under the Obama administration." It grew exponentially under the Reagan and Bush 2 admins. These policies were unquestionably supported by conservatives until a Dem was in office. They have also never shown any inclination to taking any steps to getting the budget under control. This is because they're hypocrites. Write comment

It's difficult for anyone to argue that the foreign policy of the Jimmy Carter administration could be deemed a success. He significantly weakened the the military and diplomatic presence of the U.S. all over the globe during his reign, under the naive assumption that he didn't want America to appear as a so-called 'imperialist' nation.
