The Amarillo Globe-News quotes Hance as saying that, "the opportunity to work with Pantex to create a research wind farm is very exciting. We hope to include a large number of other academic, industrial and government partners in the effort to create a world-class research facility focused on renewable energy and education." On Tuesday, Amarillo city commissioners voted 4-0 to approve a $100,000 grant to assist Tech in constructing the proposed National Wind Resource Center nearby Pantex, City commissioner Ron Boyd acted as mayor pro-tem to substitute the abscence of Mayor Debra McCartt. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D.-N.Y.) may oppose the construction of wind farms, but many rich and powerful figures in Texas have been championing the cause of wind farms as of late. On Tuesday, Texas Tech University and Pantex officials reached an agreement to help establish a Pantex research wind farm and provide electrical power for the Energy Department weapons facility.
