$100,000 Pork-Barrel Check Sent to Wrong Town PDF Print E-mail
by Tom McGregor    Sat, Dec 19, 2009, 08:16 PM

Clyburn Earmark.jpgRep. James E. Clyburn (D.-S.C.) had earmarked $100,000 in taxpayer funds to go to Jamestown's library in Jamestown, S.C., which is located in his Congressional district.

"But in the bustle to write and pass the $1.1 trillion catchall spending bill," according to the Washington Times, "Congress ended up designating the money for Jamestown, Calif. - 2,700 miles away and a to a town that doesn't even have a library."

Chris Pipkin, who runs the one-room library in Jamestown, S.C., and earlier requested $50,000, not the $100,000 that Congress designated, to purchase new computers and build shelves to hold the books scattered across the room, said, "that figures for government, doesn't it?"

The library had been just one of more than 5,000 pork-barrel projects, or so-called earmerks, which totalled $3.9 billion, snuck inside the report to accompany the catch-all spending bill Congress submitted to President Barack Obama this week. The president signed the $1 trillion bill on Wednesday that violates his company pledge to permit the public five days to comment on bills before he signs them.

As reported by the Washington Times, "the bill, which funds most domestic federal agencies for fiscal 2010, includes projects such as $200,000 to study elderly Irish immigrants in New York, $1 million to add plumbing to houses in Maryland and $487,000 to build office space so Winston-Salem, N.C., can try to attract businesses to a blighted area."

Military construction projects just so happen to be the most expensive items, and among the largest is $26.4 million to construct a fitness center at a Mayport Naval Station in Florida, as requested by Rep. Ander Crenshaw, a Florida Republican.

Mr. Crenshaw's office said, "with no indoor pool at Mayport, search-and-rescue divers have trouble doing year-round training, and the weather in Florida is so hot that it's considered dangerous to exercise outdoors during most of the summer and much of the spring and fall."

It's time for the Taxpayer Bill of Rights to be passed as a constitutional amendment.

We should be able to hold all Members of Congress accountable for each bill they pass. If they didn't get around to reading it, they erred to their own peril.

This is just an example of how our representatives are not doing their jobs.

This incident is a good illustration of the failure of the characters in Congress, and most particularly the commies and the so-called DEMS [many of whom these days are really just commies] in the federal Congress, to act as good stewards. All of this "Robin Hood" government is going to have long term, and very bad, effects on the welfare of the American nation and its people.

That's as bad as Senator Hutchison fighting for federal money for CHIP,children's health and Medicare and Governor Perry forfeited 772 million in matching federal money, even after congress granted several extensions. The sum now tops $1 billion. You call that leadership?

If you actually read the story, you soon learn that there is so much waste and "pork" out of Democrats that they actually appropriated over $100,000 to the wrong "Jamestown" on the wrong coast.

That's beyond wasteful; it's stupid, irresponsible, and ignorant.

$100,000 would feed ten families of four or more quite well for a year. We have people starving many millions are out of work, and many of those have no home and have been thrown out in the street.

$26 million to construct a fitness center? Are you kidding me? That would pay for personal trainers for the entire Coast Guard!!!

Democrats are spending us into bankruptcy.

$773 million dollars appropriated by President Bush for children's health care went unspent in Texas, while local tax payers picked up the tab.The money went to other States. It has nothing to do with Party, it's about tax money for Texas. Being sent to Other States, while we Texans property tax go up ,for the County Hospital District. You can play that Democrats vs Republican game if you want, but Obama has not been in the White House a year, the $227 million per day spent on the war started under Republicans. The 1.4 Billion given to Mexico,Republicans.I don't care what party they belong to ,my darn tax or to high. $200,000.00 is not to much to spend on a Library,so they made mistake on the Town, the money will be sent back and mistake corrected.
Ask Perry ,how do we Texans get the billion he sent back.Where do you think the Cooper Center came from?Republicans, wake up, they all do it.Dick Chaney's Halibuton has made Billion and over billed 9 million to the State Department for the war.Give me a break both Parties do it,the only difference is Republicans make money for the rich,Democrats make 80% for the rich and carve out 20% for the poor.
